Tottenham Captain Romero Set for €40M Inter Move

Cristian "Cuti" Romero's future is becoming clearer. According to ESPN Argentina, Inter Milan and Tottenham have reached an agreement in principle worth €40 million (£34.2 million) for the 28-year-old Argentine centre-back. The World Cup winner is set to return to Serie A, the league where he established himself as one of Europe's top defenders before his move to England.

Negotiations between the two clubs accelerated following direct talks between Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio and the Tottenham hierarchy. While Spurs initially held out for a higher valuation, both parties found common ground on a financial package that allows Tottenham to recoup a significant portion of their original outlay while granting Romero his desired move away from the Premier League. According to reports, the deal could be structured as a loan with a mandatory purchase clause rather than a straightforward transfer.

Romero, who made over 120 appearances across all competitions for Tottenham, frequently captained the side, and played a key role in their 2024-25 UEFA Europa League triumph — their first trophy since 2008 — has his impending departure aligning with head coach Roberto De Zerbi's ongoing squad overhaul. De Zerbi confirmed he made no attempt to convince Romero to stay, indicating the defender had made clear last season that he wanted a new challenge. Spurs have already reinforced their defensive options ahead of Romero's exit, completing summer deals for centre-backs Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi.
