Tough news after glory: Rodri to undergo surgery on Monday

An unexpected health development has followed one of the World Cup's biggest success stories. According to BBC Sport, Rodri is set to undergo back surgery on Monday. Manchester City's new head coach Enzo Maresca personally confirmed the date at his first press conference since taking charge.

Maresca's statement was both clear and understanding. "I think every manager wants to have Rodri because he is a top player. But now, surgery on Monday. He needs a holiday, he needs to rest and recover and then he will be back with us."

This statement also marks a turning point within the club. It represents the Italian coach, who took over at City following Pep Guardiola's decade-long, 20-trophy reign, bringing clarity to one of the club's first pressing issues in the role.

The timing of the surgery is also notable. It comes immediately after Rodri captained Spain to the World Cup title and won the tournament's Golden Ball award; according to Sky Sports, this development leaves the player at risk of missing City's Premier League opener against Bournemouth on August 23, having already been ruled out of the Community Shield against Arsenal.

Rodri's last two seasons have been marred by injuries. Having missed almost the entirety of the 2024-25 season with just three Premier League appearances following a torn ACL suffered in September 2024, the player was also limited to just 21 league matches last season due to various injury issues.

The player's club future also hangs in the shadow of this development. With one year remaining on his City contract and having been linked with a move to Real Madrid, Rodri is reported to be wanted by new head coach Maresca and the club, who are planning to offer him a new contract.
