Two fronts for Greenwood: Fenerbahçe agree, Roma persist

The future of Marseille's English striker Mason Greenwood remains one of the most active files of this summer's transfer window. According to the latest reported by L'Equipe today, important steps have been taken on both the Fenerbahçe and Roma sides over Greenwood's transfer; but Marseille's high expectation on the fee stands out as the main factor locking the process.

Per L'Equipe, Greenwood has reached an agreement on personal terms with Fenerbahçe. But there is a crucial obstacle here: it is stated the Istanbul club will not pay Marseille more than €30 million including bonuses. That figure falls well short of the €50 million Marseille are asking for the player. Marseille's firmness on this is also influenced by the 40% sell-on clause owed to Manchester United.

On the other front, Roma are involved. The Italian side's head coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, sees Greenwood as an ideal wide player for his 3-4-3 system and badly wants the transfer. However, Roma also need to make sales from their own squad before 30 June to balance their finances in order to complete the move. This shows the race is still open despite Fenerbahçe's agreement on personal terms.

Marseille's obligation to sell the player is also added to the equation; the French side, under the watch of the DNCG (French football's financial regulator), want to balance their budget before 30 June. The 24-year-old Greenwood, who has produced 26 goals and 11 assists in 45 games for Marseille this season, has created a strong market for himself with his on-pitch performances. Although Fenerbahçe have moved ahead on personal terms, Roma's persistence and Marseille's fee expectation leave it uncertain how the file will resolve by 30 June.
