One of football's most inspiring stories this summer has been crowned with a happy ending. Chile's biggest club Colo Colo has officially announced the signing of Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, one of the most talked-about names of the World Cup.
The beginning of this fairy tale coincided with a World Cup miracle. Born Josimar Jose Evora Dias, the 40-year-old shot-stopper caught the football world's attention on June 15 with his performance in Cape Verde's 0-0 draw against eventual champions Spain — the first World Cup match in Cape Verde's history.
The tournament success story did not end there. Cape Verde went on to draw 2-2 with Uruguay and 0-0 with Saudi Arabia, before pushing Lionel Messi's Argentina to extra time in the Round of 32.
Vozinha's individual statistics also show he was the key figure behind this success. Named to the tournament's official team, Vozinha made 18 saves across four matches — 15 of them against the two eventual finalists — playing a key role in Cape Verde completing the tournament without conceding in 90 minutes; his seven-save clean sheet against Spain made him the oldest goalkeeper to record a shutout in a World Cup debut.
The global echo of this performance was also considerable. Vozinha, whose social media following grew from 50,000 to over 29 million during the tournament and who also drew interest from MLS side Inter Miami, has a career spanning clubs in Angola, Moldova, Cyprus, Slovakia and Portugal; he entered the World Cup as a free agent after his contract with Portuguese second-tier side Chaves expired.
The club's and fans' reaction to this transfer was also full of enthusiasm. Anibal Mosa, president of the Blanco y Negro company, confirmed the goalkeeper would soon arrive in Chile, while the club sparked huge excitement among both Colo Colo supporters and fans of the national team — which failed to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup this year — with a social media post reading: "Welcome. We're waiting for you."
