Argentine player Francisco Cerúndolo claimed the title at the ATP grass-court tournament in London, beating American Tommy Paul at the end of a tight three-set battle in the final. The final, lasting over three hours with both players enjoying spells on top, ended in Cerúndolo's favour.
After a gruelling contest that saw the first two sets go to tie-breaks, Cerúndolo took control of the match and got the better of his opponent in the closing set to claim the trophy. The two players, sitting very close in the ATP rankings (Cerúndolo No. 27, Paul No. 28), produced an even contest on court too; composure at key moments and the serve-return balance made the difference. The match was officiated by a British umpire.
This win is especially meaningful for Cerúndolo. Known as a clay-court specialist, the Argentine proved with this title that he can compete on grass too, away from his favourite surface. Grass rewards fast, flat play and takes time to adjust to; Cerúndolo winning a tournament here stands out as a notable achievement in terms of his game's variety and adaptability.
The timing of the victory is also key. Won just days before Wimbledon, the season's most prestigious grass-court event, this title significantly boosted Cerúndolo's confidence ahead of the major and made him a dangerous contender even on an unfamiliar surface. The Argentine is now a name to watch for the opponents who face him in the Wimbledon draw.
For the beaten finalist Tommy Paul, the result, while a disappointment, is not entirely negative in terms of morale. Reaching a grass-court final, the American gained valuable match practice and showed his form on the surface before Wimbledon. Playing out a three-set final can be read as a sign that he too is well prepared for the major. Both players will continue at Wimbledon, which begins shortly; but the winner of the day was Francisco Cerúndolo, leaving the top with an unexpected grass-court success.
