The longest battle of the Wimbledon round of 16 unfolded on Court One. Third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-7(4), 7-6(6), 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-1 after a five-set war lasting four hours and 24 minutes to reach the quarterfinals. The world number four from Canada emerged standing from a marathon that featured three tie-breaks.
The contest was a test of nerve from first ball to last. Davidovich Fokina took the opening-set tie-break, before Auger-Aliassime edged a breathless 8-6 breaker in the second. The Canadian appeared to seize control by taking the third set 6-3, only for the Spaniard to force a decider with a 7-2 tie-break in the fourth. The final set, however, proved a one-sided anticlimax: against an opponent fading physically, Auger-Aliassime wrapped it up 6-1 in just 32 minutes. Between them the pair struck 110 winners.
The Canadian's attacking numbers were striking: Auger-Aliassime produced 65 winners across the match and won 78 per cent of the points behind his first serve. Davidovich Fokina, by contrast, paid a heavy price for converting only one of the seven break chances he created.
Enjoying the most consistent stretch of his career and having climbed to fourth in the rankings, Auger-Aliassime will play a Wimbledon quarterfinal for the first time since 2022. The Canadian's next opponent will come from the clash in his section of the draw. Davidovich Fokina, a player whose talent has so often been shadowed by agonising near-misses on the big stages, leaves London with one more heartbreaking chapter.
