Barcelona's plan to sign Luis Suarez, one of their alternative summer targets, has fallen through. It has emerged that the Catalan club does not have the financial capacity to pay the €80 million release clause in the Colombian striker's contract. The development will require Barcelona to reconsider their plans for reinforcing the attack.

Sporting, meanwhile, are said to have taken a clear stance on the matter. The Portuguese club are reported to be insisting they will not offer any discount on Suarez and that the full release clause must be paid. This firm position largely rules out Barcelona's transfer plan.

As a result, the Colombian forward is expected to remain at Sporting. Suarez's performances at the club are said to be a factor behind the Portuguese side's firm stance, with the player considered highly valuable to the team and therefore not subject to any discount.

Barcelona's management are expected to begin considering different alternatives for the attack following this development. The outcome of the Catalan club's priority target, Julian Alvarez, is now taking on even greater importance.
