Bielsa: I failed to get the best from quality players

After Uruguay's elimination in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, head coach Marcelo Bielsa delivered one of the most self-critical assessments of his tenure. Speaking after the 1-0 defeat to Spain that made progress from the group impossible, the Argentine took full responsibility for the failure.

Bielsa's most striking comments were about his squad. The veteran coach, saying he had been tasked with managing a highly qualified group of players, admitted that he had failed to get the best out of them. Placing the blame directly on himself rather than his players, Bielsa gave a stark answer when asked what he leaves behind for Uruguayan football: he said three years of work does not become a lasting contribution if results are not achieved, and that he therefore leaves "nothing" behind. Asked how he would be remembered, he replied: as a spell that left nothing.

Despite taking full responsibility, Bielsa believes his team were far unluckier than their performance on the pitch deserved. Saying they deserved seven points from the three matches but left with only two, the coach stressed that mistakes can happen in football, but that the way they played did not merit this outcome. Uruguay finished third in their group on two points and were eliminated, while World Cup newcomers Cape Verde advanced in second place.

Bielsa's contract with Uruguay ran through the World Cup, and the coach had already announced his time would end after the tournament. For Uruguay, the highest-ranked side eliminated so far at 19th in the FIFA rankings, this farewell marked Bielsa's second World Cup group-stage exit, after Argentina's debacle in 2002.
