Big sacrifice from Wembanyama: passing up the max

A decision rarely seen from a star is on the table in the NBA. According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, San Antonio Spurs young superstar Victor Wembanyama is seriously considering accepting less than the maximum contract he is eligible to sign. The 22-year-old French star is weighing the sacrifice in order to give his team greater financial flexibility to build the roster.

Wembanyama becomes eligible for a rookie extension this offseason and could ordinarily sign a five-year deal worth roughly $252 million. Should he win MVP, Defensive Player of the Year or make an All-NBA team next season, that figure could climb above $300 million under the "Rose rule," rising to 30 percent of the salary cap. Having won last season's Defensive Player of the Year award and finished third in MVP voting, Wembanyama looks highly likely to hit those triggers.

However, the second-apron system introduced in the 2023 collective bargaining agreement, which functions as a de facto hard cap, has created a landscape that squeezes even superstars. On the Spurs' side, De'Aaron Fox's four-year, $221 million contract kicks in next season, while Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper will become extension-eligible in the near future. Wembanyama signing for less would make it easier for the club to keep that young core together.

Wembanyama hinted at his intentions on Friday, posting on social media, "Spurs family, I'm here to stay. Whatever it takes." While NBA figures such as Dirk Nowitzki, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili made similar sacrifices, they typically did so later in their careers. For a player just 22 years old to take that step would be highly unusual. It is also worth noting that the players' union is not known to welcome the league's best talents signing below market value in their prime years.
