The outcome of a process that ran for months and became the longest free agency wait in NBA history has finally been announced. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, LeBron James is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8 million deal with a player option; the news was confirmed to ESPN by Klutch Sports Group CEO and "Game Over" show host Rich Paul.
This decision also carries historic significance for James' career. Committing to a fourth NBA team over the course of his career, James is reported to be seeking a fifth championship before retirement.
James offered an emotional statement on the background to his decision. In a message shared on X, he summarised the uncertainty he had faced over his future: "I thought I was done when the season ended. I wasn't ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game. I was honest at that last press conference when I said I needed to look at myself and decide if I still love this game. I still truly love this game, and I have more to give. The last few weeks have really been special."
There was a major move behind Philadelphia winning this transfer. It is recalled that the Sixers shocked the NBA this summer with a trade sending Paul George and draft picks to the Boston Celtics for Jaylen Brown, a move that is reported to have influenced James taking Philadelphia's pitch seriously; Bob Myers, president of Sixers owner Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, is reported to have made a direct pitch to James as a guest on Rich Paul's "Game Over" podcast.
This move also carries symbolic significance. It is emphasised that James, with this decision, is aiming to end Philadelphia's 43-year championship drought (last won in 1983), much as he ended Cleveland's 52-year title drought with the Cavaliers in 2016.
James' career statistics also underscore the magnitude of this decision. Having spent eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and led the franchise to its 17th championship in 2020, the 41-year-old James enters a record-breaking 24th season with a fifth different team, following the Cleveland Cavaliers (two spells), Miami Heat and Lakers; James, the NBA's all-time leader in regular-season points (43,440) and games played (1,622), and the only player in league history with 10,000-plus points, rebounds and assists, sees this decision described as potentially the last free agency choice of his career.
