In 2026 FIFA World Cup Group E, Ecuador and Curaçao — both beaten in their openers — meet at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Saturday. With both seeking their first win, the result is crucial for their hopes of advancing.

South American side Ecuador were locked in an even and at times frustrating battle with Côte d'Ivoire for 90 minutes in Philadelphia, losing 1-0 to a 90th-minute goal from Manchester United winger Amad Diallo. Defeat in those circumstances was harsh and a bitter pill.

Curaçao, meanwhile, were thrashed 7-1 by Germany in their World Cup debut, one of the heaviest defeats of the tournament. There were brief signs of promise in that game, but it was never close.

Losing an opener at a World Cup used to be potentially disastrous given the small margin for error. Now, with 48 teams chasing 32 knockout places, the jeopardy is much lower; four points usually guarantees progress, and in some cases even three may be enough. This is perhaps the best chance either team has of winning a match.

According to SI.com, every team in Group E sees Curaçao as a comfortably winnable match and most of a knockout ticket. Ecuador had chances to beat Côte d'Ivoire and should take the positives into what ought to be a confidence-boosting win. Even though Curaçao briefly threatened Germany, they lack overall quality.

A key figure is Ecuador's veteran striker Enner Valencia. With six goals across the 2014 and 2022 World Cups — a national record — Valencia hit the post against Côte d'Ivoire without scoring and will again be a focal point. Despite geographic proximity in the Americas, the two nations meet for the first time.

Sebastián Beccacece used a 3-4-3 against Côte d'Ivoire, but dropping a centre-back for an extra creator could be the key to a stress-free contest. For Curaçao, defeat by 7-1 might tempt changes, but their first 35 minutes against Germany offer an argument for going again with the same team.

SI.com predict 3-0 to Ecuador.
