Fery's epic near-five-hour victory

The best story of this year's Wimbledon turned into a genuine epic on Centre Court, lasting three hours and 58 minutes. Arthur Fery, the 23-year-old British wild card, beat former world No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(10-7) to reach his first career Grand Slam quarterfinal. Ranked outside the top 300 just a year ago, the young Brit is living out a genuine fairytale at his home Grand Slam.

The match was an extraordinary rollercoaster. Fery took the opening set 7-5, only to drop the next two 3-6, 4-6 as Dimitrov seized control. But the Brit refused to fold, taking the fourth set 6-4 to force a decider. Neither man could find a decisive edge in the fifth, and the contest went to a tie-break once more. In an extended breaker, Fery sealed victory 10-7.

The statistics reveal just how attacking the contest was: the two players combined for 108 winners, with Fery striking 72 to Dimitrov's 36. Winning 81 per cent of points behind his first serve, Fery also matched his opponent on break-point chances, with both men converting 4 of 9. The win completed a remarkable run of deciding sets for Fery across his last three matches; the young Brit also came through five-setters against Otto Virtanen and, dramatically, Zizou Bergs earlier in the tournament.

The result makes Fery the first British man to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals since Cameron Norrie's run to the semifinals in 2022. Ranked outside the top 300 just twelve months ago, the young Brit will crack the top 100 after this tournament and remains the most talked-about story in British tennis.
