The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has implemented a critical shift in its governance, removing term limits for the presidency and various internal positions. This significant regulatory change was approved by member clubs and delegates during the FIA Extraordinary General Assembly held in Macau.
Previously, FIA presidents and members of various management bodies were restricted to a maximum of 12 years in office. With this amendment, that restriction has been abolished. FIA management stated that the move aims to align the presidency with the structure of the World Motor Sport Council and the Senate, which already operated without term limits.

Current FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who was re-elected for a second four-year term in late 2025 without opposition, now has the path cleared to run for a third term in 2029. However, the existing FIA rule imposing a 70-year age limit for the presidency remains in effect, meaning Ben Sulayem can continue his tenure only until he reaches that age.
Furthermore, the FIA has tightened eligibility criteria for presidential candidates. Through the newly renamed "Eligibility Assessment Committee" (formerly the Nomination Committee), the federation has established more rigorous oversight to ensure that future candidates possess significant experience within FIA-affiliated clubs or organizations.
