The Hungarian Grand Prix, the final stop of the 2026 Formula 1 season before the summer break, witnessed tremendous excitement at the Hungaroring circuit. In a breathtaking 70-lap battle defined by intense strategic warfare, McLaren’s British star Lando Norris was the first to cross the finish line. Entering the race as the reigning world champion, Norris delivered a flawless performance to celebrate his first race victory of the season.
Starting from pole position and defending his lead through the first corner, Lando Norris faced intense pressure from his teammate Oscar Piastri toward the end of the opening lap and conceded the lead to the Australian driver. Piastri, who commanded the race for the majority of the afternoon, lost valuable seconds due to contact while lapping Williams driver Carlos Sainz. Piastri’s misfortune did not end there; on lap 56, he suffered a mechanical failure in his gearbox, forcing a tragic retirement from the race.
Capitalizing on the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) period triggered by Piastri’s stoppage with a flawless strategy, reigning champion Lando Norris pitted for a fresh set of soft tyres. Controlling the pace over the remaining laps, Norris delivered an unbeatable drive to climb to the top step of the podium for the first time in the 2026 season.
Red Bull Racing’s four-time world champion Max Verstappen put his vast experience on display despite complaining about car balance and gear-shift issues throughout the race. The Dutch driver crossed the finish line in second place, 15 seconds behind Norris, securing valuable points. One of the day's most standout performances came from Mercedes’ Italian young talent, Kimi Antonelli. Leading the race at certain stages and successfully executing his strategy, Antonelli finished third ahead of Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, securing the final spot on the podium. Ferrari drivers Leclerc and Hamilton finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
