Klopp takes charge of Germany: "Leave my family alone"

An eagerly anticipated appointment in German football has become reality. Jurgen Klopp has been unveiled as Germany's new national team head coach by the German Football Association, with a contract running through the 2030 World Cup. The 59-year-old made clear at his introductory press conference that he expects his family's privacy to be respected throughout his tenure.

Klopp's statement carried a rather sharp and blunt tone. "I'm taking this job even though I've seen how you treated Nagelsmann. I'm taking this job even though I've seen how you've treated Thomas Tuchel in England. The day you don't want me anymore, I'm gone, without any severance pay. If you say tomorrow, 'He's rubbish,' tell me to my face and I'll leave. If you behave badly and don't leave my family alone, I'm gone, I'll just turn away. Criticise me if something doesn't work. Jurgen Klopp is not going to have any career after the national team. This is the pinnacle of my career as a coach. I will give it everything I've got."

He also explained his motivation for accepting the role. "I'm not doing this job for myself, I'm doing it for you," Klopp said, touching on the national team's power to bring Germans together.

The background to this stern warning is also understandable. It comes immediately after his predecessor Julian Nagelsmann faced heavy criticism in the German press following Germany's disappointing World Cup performance (elimination in the Round of 32 to Paraguay), and after England head coach Thomas Tuchel faced a similar storm of criticism; it is emphasised that Klopp, by directly referencing the treatment of these two coaches, drew a clear line for both fans and the media.

This appointment also marks a new chapter in the coach's career. Taking charge of a national team for the first time following his successful spells at Dortmund and Liverpool, Klopp has taken on the task of rebuilding the country following Germany's disappointment at the 2026 World Cup.
