Krueger resists but Kostyuk marches into the quarterfinals

Marta Kostyuk booked her place in the Wimbledon quarterfinals with a composed 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ashley Krueger on Court 2 in the round of 16. In one hour and 23 minutes, the Ukrainian produced 22 winners and capitalised on Krueger's 29 unforced errors, winning 68 per cent of first-serve points throughout.

Krueger showed resistance at key moments in the first set, but struggled to absorb Kostyuk's attacking pressure for long. Converting two of her four break chances, Kostyuk closed out the set 6-4. The second set followed the same pattern: Kostyuk swiftly neutralised her opponent's brief spells of control, converting four of ten break points to wrap up the set and the match 6-4. In both sets, Kostyuk's composure in the critical moments deflated her opponent early.

The victory adds another layer to a Wimbledon run that has confirmed Kostyuk as one of the most consistent performers on grass in recent seasons. Secondary statistics — return-game efficiency and first-serve point conversion — paint a picture of a one-sided contest. Krueger competed hard throughout but could find no lasting answer to her opponent's quality.

Kostyuk's quarterfinal opponent will emerge from the corresponding section of the draw. With the women's draw having already produced a string of major upsets, the path ahead looks genuinely open for the Ukrainian.
