"Rafa," the documentary chronicling the life and career of tennis great Rafael Nadal, premiered on Netflix on May 29. Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Zach Heinzerling, the series focuses on the 22-time Grand Slam and 14-time Roland Garros champion's 2024 season, as he battled to return to the court following hip surgery. The director described the moment he joined the project, recalling that Nadal had come back from a year away after surgery, trying for one last run, perhaps one last Roland Garros.
The four-part series traces Nadal's tennis journey from age three all the way through to his emotional 2024 comeback, drawing on never-before-seen archival footage. The documentary also features intimate interviews with his greatest career rivals, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and John McEnroe, who reflect on the legacy Nadal leaves on the sport and its culture of competitiveness.
Produced by Skydance Sports, the series looks beyond his on-court triumphs to the invisible effort behind more than two decades at the top of the game. Nadal, who ended his career at last year's Davis Cup Finals and retired with 1,080 career wins and 92 titles, has described his reaction to being the subject of the project simply: he never imagined doing something like this.
