In the third round of Roland Garros 2026, Russian Andrey Rublev defeated Portugal's Nuno Borges 7-5, 7-6, 7-6 at Court Suzanne-Lenglen to advance to the round of 16. The 2-hour-42-minute match was marked by two competitive tie-breaks and close margins in every set. Rublev raised his career win count against Borges to 5-0; the Portuguese, on the other hand, was eliminated against Rublev for the fourth time without even taking a set.

The match statistics clearly demonstrate how difficult Rublev's task was. The Russian star kept his first serve in play at 63%, while Borges (68%) was slightly better in this category. However, Rublev established a clear advantage with 12 service aces against Borges's 6. Win rates on second serves also made a difference: Rublev's 57% versus Borges's 50%. In the total points table, the Russian also finished ahead 119-110 — only a 9-point difference, a clear indicator of how close the match was.

In the rally length graphs, the two players' different strategies also stood out. In the 1-4 stroke fast rallies section, Borges maintained resistance at 56-58. In the 5-8 stroke medium rallies section, the picture was also close: Borges 40-44. The long rallies of 9 or more strokes were closed in Rublev's favor: 14-17. Although Borges won 20 strokes per Court Vision data, Rublev's baseline resilience was the decisive element of the match.

The final point of the match came at 02:42:57: Rublev's 190 km/h first serve to the deuce court caused Borges to make a long return; the match ended with AI Commentary's note "Rublev wins the tiebreak and the match on Court Suzanne-Lenglen."

This victory is also a critical step for Rublev in terms of his career record. He was a 4th-round exit at Roland Garros last year; in 2023 and 2024 he had left the tournament in the third round. He made the quarter-finals in 2020 and 2022, so this time he is at least progressing toward his third Roland Garros quarter-final appointment. The 4th round match to be played against Karen Khachanov or Jesper de Jong could mean Rublev's sixth career Grand Slam quarter-final chance.

For Borges, disappointment was repeated. The Portuguese tennis player was eliminated in the third round of a Grand Slam for the third time without taking a set, and the overall score against Rublev rose to 0-5.
