The qualifying session for the 2026 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix was completed at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, and pole position belonged to George Russell. The 28-year-old British driver beat everyone with his time of 1:14.679 in Q3 with Mercedes and secured the third pole position of the season. Russell made a strong comeback after his disappointment-filled weekend in Monaco. On the front row alongside Russell will be seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, racing with Ferrari. The 41-year-old Brit moved to the front row by being only 0.064 seconds off pole with his last-tour effort, returning to a front-row start this season.
The biggest dramatic moment of qualifying came in Q3. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli's hope of taking the front row alongside his Mercedes team-mate was alive until the last moment; however, Hamilton's last lap time pushed the Italian to third place. This result was recorded as Antonelli's worst qualifying performance of the season. Shortly after Q3 began, Charles Leclerc lost control between Turns 4 and 5, went through the gravel and hit the barrier hard. The Monegasque driver came out of the car safely, but the front of his SF-26 sustained serious damage. With 8 minutes and 30 seconds remaining after the crash, the red flag was raised and Leclerc remained 10th without setting a Q3 time. Reigning champion Lando Norris fourth, Max Verstappen fifth, Isack Hadjar sixth and Oscar Piastri will start the race in seventh.
McLaren's performance falling well below expectations was one of the surprises of the weekend. The papaya-coloured team, shown as one of the pre-race favourites, was completely left out of the front-row battle in qualifying. This situation adds a different dimension to the championship battle between Norris and Antonelli. Antonelli currently leads Russell by 68 points; Russell, on the other hand, caught his team's important comeback chance with Saturday morning's strong performance.
The 66-lap race to be held tomorrow will start at 16:00 Turkey time on Sunday, June 14. Local times: Barcelona CEST 15:00, BST 14:00. Russell will chase the third victory of the season from pole position. Whether Hamilton can take his long-awaited first victory with Ferrari stands out as one of the most critical questions of the weekend. For Antonelli, a podium that will ease the pressure in the championship battle carries critical importance. The Barcelona track is an ideal venue for the battle to be colourful in both attack and defence terms; the presence of fast corners alongside long straights offers various options to teams in terms of strategy.
