A remarkable story in tennis reached its conclusion in Washington. World No. 28 Alexandra Eala of the Philippines defeated world No. 3 Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the Mubadala DC Open final, a match that stretched across two days due to repeated weather delays. After dropping the opening set, the 21-year-old staged a stunning comeback, sweeping the final two sets and closing out the third without dropping a single game.

The match had been suspended on Sunday at 6-4, 1-2 due to severe thunderstorms, with the conclusion pushed to Monday. Upon resumption, Eala took the second set 6-4 to force a decider, then completely overwhelmed her experienced opponent in the third, winning it 6-0 to secure the first WTA Tour-level title of her career. The statistics reflected Eala's dominance in the latter stages, winning 56% of her second-serve points and edging Pegula 5-9 in break points won.

Along the way to the title, Eala had already knocked out defending champion Leylah Fernandez, second seed Elina Svitolina and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, cementing this triumph as a landmark moment in Philippine tennis history. Pegula, who won her first WTA title at the same tournament back in 2019, missed the chance to lift a second Washington trophy.
