The title at the ATP 500 Mubadala DC Open in Washington went to home favourite Taylor Fritz. The third seed, who battled past fellow American Brandon Nakashima in a three-set semifinal, defeated 19-year-old Spanish sensation Rafael Jodar 7-6, 6-4 in the final. Having never previously advanced past the semifinals in five appearances at the tournament, Fritz claimed his first-ever Washington title with the victory.
Jodar, who reached his maiden ATP 500 final after knocking out the likes of Arthur Fils, Kei Nishikori, Lorenzo Musetti and Alejandro Tabilo along the way, was ranked 478th in the world just a year ago. The run guaranteed him a place inside the top 15 for the first time in his career. The final had been delayed by heavy rain over the weekend before finally concluding on Monday. The statistics reflected Fritz's dominance on serve, winning 85% of his first-serve points compared to Jodar's 67%.
The pair's only previous meeting came in February this year in Delray Beach, a match Fritz also won. With this being his first ATP 500 title since Tokyo in October 2022, the victory is expected to provide a significant confidence boost for the American star heading into the rest of the summer hard-court season and next month's US Open.
