After the completion of the Austrian Grand Prix, the eighth race of the Formula 1 season, the picture in the drivers' championship has taken new shape. The race, won by George Russell from pole position, affected both the balance at the top and the order behind. Eight of the 22 races are now done.
The championship leader remains Mercedes' young driver Kimi Antonelli, who finished third in Austria. However, Antonelli's advantage has shrunk: his teammate George Russell, who took his second win of the season, climbed to second and cut the gap to 40 points. Lewis Hamilton, fifth in Austria, dropped to third, meaning the top three are made up of the Mercedes-Ferrari line.
There is fierce competition in the midfield too. McLaren's Oscar Piastri sits fourth, ahead of teammate Lando Norris; Ferrari's Charles Leclerc is sixth. Max Verstappen, who finished second in Austria for his best result of the season, joined the group just behind that trio. Red Bull's Isack Hadjar climbed to eighth, moving ahead of Pierre Gasly, whose run of points finishes continues.
In the constructors' championship, Mercedes maintain their dominance. The Silver Arrows took their total to 302 with the points gathered in Austria and moved 98 clear of second-placed Ferrari. The fact that Mercedes have won seven of the eight races this season clearly underlines the team's superiority. The championship heads into its next stop, the British Grand Prix, with this picture. Here is the updated and full standings of the drivers' championship after the Austrian GP:
