Turkish player Zeynep Sönmez claimed a notable win in the Wimbledon Ladies' Singles first round. Facing American Ann Li, ranked 29th in the world and a seed at the tournament, Sönmez won a tightly contested match 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 to book her place in the second round of the main draw.
After taking the first set 7-5, Sönmez lost the second 6-1, leaving the match level. But the Turkish player got the better of her opponent in the decisive third set, closing it out 6-4 in 1 hour 52 minutes for an eye-catching result on grass.
