Despite losing the Wimbledon final to Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev spoke with immense optimism and ambition during his press conference. The 29-year-old German openly declared his goal of dismantling the current hierarchy in men's tennis: "There was always this talk: 'Who is going to be the third guy behind Sinner and Alcaraz?' I was always the third guy, but I was very far from those two. Now, if I get closer to them... that would be amazing." Zverev emphasized his desire to establish a new "Big Three" era in the sport.
The foundation for this bold statement is strong. During a dominant stretch where Sinner and Alcaraz shared the last 9 Grand Slam titles, Zverev was the one to break the chain by winning Roland Garros earlier this year. Having previously never advanced past the 4th round in London, he reached his first-ever Wimbledon final this year. Now officially the world No. 2 as of Monday, overtaking Alcaraz, Zverev holds a significant advantage while the Spanish star remains sidelined with a wrist injury. The upcoming North American hard-court season is viewed as the perfect opportunity for the German to completely shed the "third guy" label.
