The most striking part of this scenario is the prospect of LeBron James and Stephen Curry sharing a team. The idea, which seemed almost unthinkable a few months ago, is still considered unlikely, but it isn't stopping the Warriors from trying. Per Slater, Golden State is preparing to make some roster and salary moves to free up that $15.1 million offer, though no concrete step has been taken yet. The report says the Warriors could also tack on a second-year player option and even bring Curry directly into the recruitment process, but that option has not yet been explored.
For LeBron, who made more than $52 million last season, a $15.1 million deal means a serious pay cut. For a star who has earned hundreds of millions over his career and has off-court ventures too, money alone may not be decisive; but James, still a high-level player, wanting to be paid like a top-30 player is also possible. If LeBron truly wants to go to Golden State, he would have to set money aside to link up with Curry and Draymond Green.
The financial reality, however, works against the Warriors. The Los Angeles Lakers are in a position to offer James far more, whether through a direct offer or a sign-and-trade. According to another ESPN reporter, Brian Windhorst, many rival teams believe LeBron re-signing with the Lakers is the most logical path for both sides, and that they will get there in the end even if there are some bumps along the way.
The intel the Warriors have gathered also points, for now, to LeBron returning to the Lakers, and the team is building its summer plans on that premise. Still, Golden State is ready to step in if James truly tests free agency. Because of obstacles like Jimmy Butler's high salary, a max contract from the Warriors looks unfeasible; so the $15.1 million mid-level exception is the strongest card they hold. Moreover, because it would be a direct add and would not require a major salary swap, it is seen as a "low-risk" move for Golden State.
Ultimately, where LeBron James goes is entirely in his own hands. While staying with the Lakers looks like the most likely scenario, a potential partnership with Curry and Green stands on the table as an appealing alternative in what could be the final act of his career.
