FIA May Ban Mercedes' Diffuser Upon Ferrari's Request

The innovations brought by the new technical regulations in Formula 1 and the debates over their legality continue without slowing down. In recent days, one of the biggest agenda items in the paddock has been the new rear diffuser design that the Mercedes team integrated into its car. The German manufacturer, aiming to maintain its competitive position in the championship, added special extensions to its diffuser in its latest upgrade package that direct airflow much more effectively to generate extra downforce.

However, this aerodynamic move by Mercedes did not escape the attention of its biggest rival, Ferrari. The Italian team made an official request to the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to clarify how well this innovative design complies with the current technical rules. In the world of Formula 1, teams frequently make such moves to either adapt the gray areas found by their rivals for themselves or to have them completely banned.

According to the latest information, the FIA found Ferrari's request justified and has started preparations to issue an official technical directive that will rule the diffuser design in question illegal. This planned ban is expected to take effect starting from the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix. On the other hand, the Mercedes camp is conducting intense diplomacy to postpone a possible ban until at least the next race, the British Grand Prix (Silverstone), stating that the logistics trucks carrying their cars have already departed for Austria and that they believe their current parts are perfectly legal. It is stated that modifying a part to comply with the rules in time for the new race weekend would require a massive amount of time and effort. We will see how the FIA's final decision on this matter will affect the balance on the track.
