McLaren's star driver Lando Norris voiced serious criticisms regarding Formula 1's 2026 engine regulations following his home race at the British Grand Prix. The British driver, who finished the sprint race in third place and the main race in fourth at Silverstone, did not leave the weekend completely satisfied, despite a solid performance in a race ultimately won by Charles Leclerc.

Norris’s primary grievance centers around the new generation power units introduced for the 2026 season, which mandate a 50-50 power split between the internal combustion engine and electrical power. This new regulation forces drivers to lift off the throttle to recharge their batteries, even in iconic, traditionally flat-out corners like those at Silverstone. Highlighting that this negatively impacts driving dynamics, Norris bluntly stated, "I am not a fan of this driving style. Formula 1 shouldn't be like this."

The star driver expressed deep frustration that hard-fought on-track battles have been rendered somewhat meaningless. He pointed out the absurdity of executing a brilliant wheel-to-wheel overtake only for a rival to easily reclaim the position seconds later just by pushing a button. Facing similar backlash from champion drivers like Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso, Formula 1 management has agreed to reduce the electrical power ratio to 42% in 2027 and 40% in 2028. However, Norris believes these minor tweaks will not cure the underlying issue. Lamenting the loss of traditional racing feel, Norris concluded, "The harder I press the throttle pedal, the faster the car should go. This shouldn't change."
