The Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix sprint shootout witnessed a masterclass from Mercedes, while the session ended with an unfortunate crash for the veteran champion Fernando Alonso.

Displaying a stellar performance in the final part of the shootout (SQ3), George Russell claimed pole position with a time of 1:12.965. With his teammate Kimi Antonelli securing second place, Mercedes completely locked out the front row ahead of the sprint race. They were followed by McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, while Ferrari, led by Lewis Hamilton, could only manage fifth and sixth places. Red Bull suffered a disappointment with Max Verstappen finishing down in seventh.

However, the sprint shootout took a tough turn for Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso. The experienced driver lost control in the final minutes of SQ1, crashing into the barriers and triggering a red flag that halted the session.

Locking his front tires while entering turn three, the Spanish driver went off track and, unable to find an escape route on the notoriously narrow Montreal circuit, hit the wall directly. Expressing his regrets to the team over the radio immediately after the accident, Alonso later emphasized in his post-session statements that he had to take risks. Stating that he drove aggressively to compensate for the car's current lack of pace, the veteran champion said, "The Canadian track is unforgiving; there is nowhere to escape. I pushed the limits to the absolute maximum to lift the car seven or eight places above where it deserved to be."

Aston Martin, which has yet to meet expectations in the 2026 season despite entering with a Honda power unit and Adrian Newey partnership, faced another challenging weekend with this crash. Alonso, who is yet to score points this season, still managed to advance to SQ2 as the red flag prevented his rivals from completing their final laps.
