Eala dream rolls on as Swiatek bows out of Wimbledon

Centre Court witnessed the biggest shock of the tournament on Saturday. Alexandra Eala, the 21-year-old Filipina seeded 29th, defeated defending champion and world number three Iga Swiatek 7-6(9), 6-2, ending the Pole's title defence and writing her name into the history books. After two hours and 15 minutes of drama, Eala became the first Filipino player, male or female, to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam.

The match turned on a breathless first-set tie-break. Eala moved 5-3 ahead mid-set and, although Swiatek dragged the set into a breaker, the tension kept rising. Trailing 4-2 in the tie-break, the six-time Grand Slam champion lost her cool and hurled her racket into her bag, while a string of untimely double faults deepened her trouble. Eala took the 85-minute set 11-9, then rode the momentum to a 4-0 lead in the second. Despite a brief wobble at the finish line, she sealed victory on her third match point.

Swiatek, who won the title last year with a crushing 6-0, 6-0 final victory over Amanda Anisimova, had struggled for her best level all week and had already survived a first-round scare against Taylor Townsend. Eala, meanwhile, had beaten the Pole in Miami earlier this season, and this second win over her came on the grandest stage of all.

A huge star in the Philippines, Eala fought back tears in her on-court interview and dedicated the achievement to her family and the children following her back home. The young left-hander will face Jasmine Paolini, who eliminated Maria Sakkari, in the last 16.
