Free Agent Westbrook's New Home: Houston Rockets

Russell Westbrook is heading into a genuinely uncertain offseason for the first time in his career. After declining his $3.47 million player option with the Denver Nuggets, the nine-time All-Star, 37, remains unsigned, and the Houston Rockets have emerged as the most serious contender for his services — the franchise he played for during the 2019-20 season.

According to Sports Illustrated's Eric Jay Santos, Rockets management is considering bringing Westbrook back on a veteran minimum contract, valuing his experience and locker-room leadership above all else. Houston finished among the league's top 10 in net rating last season, and the report suggests the Rockets could pitch themselves to Westbrook as a genuine chance to win his first NBA championship.

One intriguing subplot is a possible reunion with former Oklahoma City Thunder teammate Kevin Durant, now on Houston's roster. At the same time, the Rockets already have a crowded backcourt with Amen Thompson, Alperen Sengun and Reed Sheppard, meaning Westbrook's role would likely be limited to bench depth and veteran leadership rather than a starting spot. His potential arrival is also being discussed as a possible stopgap while Fred VanVleet continues his recovery from injury.

Westbrook averaged 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 6.7 assists last season while shooting 42.7 percent from the field — numbers that reflect a player well past his prime but still capable of contributing quality minutes off the bench. Nothing has been finalized, and Houston is not the only interested team, but a return to the franchise where his Rockets tenure began looks increasingly plausible.
