On the opening day of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, Ghana and Panama meet for the first time in their history at BMO Field in Toronto. In Group L, where England or Croatia are favourites, neither side is fancied — but Panama are out to spring a surprise.

Panama are competing at only their second World Cup. Former Barcelona striker Thomas Christiansen has led the team for almost six years, and that stability stands in stark contrast to Ghana's chaotic preparation. After failing to register a single point in 2018, Panama have improved markedly over the past eight years, becoming one of the most effective pressing teams in qualifying with their front-foot approach.

For Ghana, the picture is less encouraging. The Black Stars, at their fifth World Cup, missed the last Africa Cup of Nations and parted ways with Otto Addo in April, turning to experienced Carlos Queiroz, who is set to become only the third man to manage at five World Cups. But Ghana have slipped to 73rd in the FIFA rankings and suffered serious injury blows before the tournament. The side have lost six of their last seven matches.

Despite their defensive gaps, Ghana rely on an attack led by Manchester City's Antoine Semenyo, with experienced Jordan Ayew another key figure. The team are without Thomas Partey, refused entry to the host country while on trial in the UK, which complicates Queiroz's midfield, and star Mohammed Kudus is also absent.

For Panama, captain Añibal Godoy, with 159 caps, anchors midfield, while Ismael Díaz — last year's Gold Cup top scorer with six goals — offers promise in attack. SI.com's prediction favours the improving Panama: 2-1. Ghana's poor form and defensive issues could hand the Central Americans a chance at a historic first World Cup win. Refereed by Sweden's Glenn Nyberg, the match is a crucial start for both teams' tournament paths.

Predicted XIs
Ghana (4-2-3-1): Zigi; Seidu, Adjetey, Opoku, Mensah; Sibo, Owusu; Williams, Ayew, Fatawu; Semenyo
Panama (3-4-3): Mosquera; Fariña, Escobar, Córdoba; Murillo, Harvey, Godoy, Davis; Bárcenas, Fajardo, Díaz
