Bad news for Lando Norris: 10-place grid penalty

Bad news has landed on McLaren in the middle of Formula 1's title fight. The team changed a component on Lando Norris's car ahead of the Belgian GP weekend, pushing the British driver over his permitted allocation and triggering an automatic 10-place grid penalty.

The background to this penalty had, in fact, been building for months. Norris had already exhausted his full allocation of three Energy Store and three Control Electronics components as early as the season's third weekend, back in March. A catastrophic battery failure at the Chinese GP — which prevented him from even starting the race — wiped out a third of his allocation in a single stroke, while a battery issue in Monaco and a hydraulic leak in Suzuka compounded the situation further.

FIA regulations kick in at this point. Requiring a fourth replacement of either the Energy Store or Control Electronics triggers an automatic 10-place grid penalty on the first offence. McLaren had arrived for the weekend with a new rear wing and the season's third ICE unit — that change carried no penalty, as it fell within the allocated quota — but a further component swap proved unavoidable, and the British driver was hit with the penalty.

The timing is particularly frustrating. Spa-Francorchamps is regarded as one of the most "energy-starved" circuits of the 2026 regulations, making grid position especially valuable this weekend. The development marks another chapter in McLaren's reliability crisis at a moment when the championship battle is heating up.
