Hamilton hits out at new-generation Formula 1

Formula 1's new regulations, introduced in 2026, have drawn striking criticism from one of the sport's biggest names. According to Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton, today's drivers are no longer being rewarded for raw speed; increasingly complex energy management systems have taken precedence over driving skill.

The seven-time world champion is uncomfortable with battery deployment and energy-saving strategies becoming the decisive element of races in the new generation of cars. Hamilton also believes the complexity affects not only the drivers but the audience; in the veteran star's view, the new rules have become difficult for fans to follow as well.

Hamilton is not alone in this view. Fernando Alonso made a similar intervention ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, noting that the nature of Spa could see battery power run out early and remarking that "when the deployment is gone, these cars are less powerful than F2". These voices rising from the drivers' side are inflaming the debate over the sporting balance of the new regulations.

The ironic part is that Hamilton is voicing these criticisms during a period in which his career is on the rise again. The English driver took his first Ferrari victory in Barcelona — a race that also produced the first all-British podium since 1968 — and completed the Silverstone weekend with sprint pole and a podium in the race, the 16th of his career at the circuit. Enjoying one of his strongest spells of the season, Hamilton's criticism of the rules is therefore being read not as "complaining about results" but as "concern for the essence of the sport". The debate is expected to reignite at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa, one of the circuits where energy deployment will be most critical.
