Harden declines option, at the table with the Cavs

One of the NBA's summer moves has come from Cleveland. Cleveland Cavaliers star guard James Harden has decided to decline the $42.3 million player option he held for the 2026-27 season. According to what has been reported, the two sides are continuing to work together on a new multiyear contract.

The move is not expected to signal a departure; on the contrary, Harden clearly stated at the end of the season that he wants to remain in Cleveland. The opt-out decision guarantees the veteran a higher total payout on a multiyear deal, while also giving the club significant financial flexibility. By handing Harden a longer contract in exchange for a lower annual salary, the Cavaliers can dip below the salary cap and apron thresholds, which opens up room for the team to build its roster.

The Cavaliers acquired Harden from the Los Angeles Clippers during this season's trade deadline, giving up Darius Garland and a second-round draft pick in return. That win-now move quickly paid off: Harden became an important part of a team that finished fourth in the Eastern Conference with a 52-30 record, averaging 20.5 points and 7.7 assists on the season. The Cavaliers closed their campaign with a series defeat to eventual champions the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals.

An 11-time All-Star and the 2018 MVP, Harden is a player who has found a good fit alongside Donovan Mitchell. With a championship his priority at this stage of his career, his future will in all likelihood be shaped at Cleveland once again; the official steps will become clearer in the coming days.
