Following the FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in Macau, critical rule changes that will shape the future of Formula 1 have officially been approved. According to the official statement, technical, sporting, and operational updates covering the remainder of the 2026 season and 2027 onwards have been finalized.
The most striking amendment is the partial reintroduction of the 'Boost Mode' system during wet conditions, which had previously been banned following driver feedback due to safety concerns regarding sudden torque increases on low-grip tracks. However, this time the system will not provide any extra power or overtaking advantage; it will be restricted solely to compensating for power losses in low-visibility and wet conditions. The overtakes function will remain completely disabled for safety reasons.

Additionally, flexibility has been introduced into the 'Heat Hazard' protocol. This warning can now be declared separately for Sprint and Main races, up to 24 hours in advance.
Major changes for future seasons focus on power unit allocation and testing durations. As of 2027, the internal combustion engine power unit distribution will favor a 58-42 ratio, shifting further to 60-40 by the 2028 season. To facilitate a smoother transition, the 2027 pre-season testing duration has been extended from three days to four days. Operational updates, such as reducing reconnaissance laps at certain circuits and shortening race distances by one or two laps if necessary, are also planned.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized that major regulatory changes require ongoing dialogue, stating that they will continue to collaborate with stakeholders to maintain a balance between innovation, performance, and safety.
